ETIAS: what we know now (status page, kept up to date)
ETIAS is not operating yet and the EU has not announced a launch date. You do not need ETIAS now and should not pay for an application ahead of time. The official site will announce a date several months before launch.
- Launch date: not announced
- Official fee (once it starts): €20
- Validity: 3 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
This page is the evergreen status page for ETIAS. The box at the top is generated from the same rules file the DayCount EU app uses, and it is updated whenever the official position changes. If the box says there is no confirmed date, that is the current position.
What ETIAS is
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a travel authorisation for visitors from countries that do not need a visa to enter the Schengen area. It is not a visa. Once it starts, eligible travellers will have to apply online before travelling and the authorisation will be linked to their passport.
ETIAS and the 90/180 rule
They are separate. ETIAS is permission to travel; the 90/180 rule limits how long you can stay. Having ETIAS will not give you extra days, and the Entry/Exit System will continue to calculate your days. See EES and the 90/180 rule.
What you should do
- Check the official page linked below before you travel.
- Do not apply or pay anyone ahead of time. Sites that offer ETIAS applications or “early access” before the system starts are not official. The official site has said the start date would be announced well in advance.
- Ignore unofficial fee claims. The official fee and validity are shown in the box above.
How this page is kept current
Whenever the EU announces anything, we update the rules file, which updates this box, the website and (after the next update check) the status card inside the app. We never hard-code a launch date. If a date is announced, it will appear here with a “last reviewed” date and a link to the official source.
